Frog Thursday
Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 7:05PM I've made many , many frogs since I began working in clay ,much more than a thousand over the years I'm sure and for some reason I never , ever get tired of making them. They're always just a bit different and all have their own personalities , some are smirky , some are sweet and some are a little deranged-looking. Customers have sent letters telling me about frogs ( and toads) they have bought, where they have been placed in their house or garden and on occasion even what they call them. My favorite was a letter I received from a woman who'd named her toad Herbert, which happened to be what my mother called me and my siblings and pets when she couldn't instantly remember our names. That and George. Which I guess is strange because three out of four of us were girls.... And it was better than the alternative , which was Mar..Jai..Le..Iz. Be that as it may , I love that something I make with my own two hands leaves me and goes into someone else's home and personal history just like the art that I grew up with went into mine.
