A Post about Posts.

Once in a while I will make ceramic banister tops/newel posts for special occasions. You didn't know that there were special occasions for banister's? Actually , I meant more that they were presents for people who really wanted them. Enough to pester me about it.  Namely , my father and brother , it's always touched me that after all the years of seeing my work all around them they wanted more and in fact wanted it imbedded into their houses. Because once you Gorilla glue something , it's on there. Permanently.  Here is one example, 2 fish on a post. Others were lizards, snakes, frogs , skinks, and a little dragon.  It's a little tricky because clay shrinks and if it's supposed to match the width of the post after it's fired....well again it's tricky. That's why I prefer the poufy look in bannister toppers, it hides the fact that I might be a tidge off. Just in case. It happens occasionally. Once in a while. Nobody's  perfect and while I'm confessing that I will also say , I've always felt those orange fish were slightly dead-ish looking like maybe they'd washed up on shore  after a chemical leak because fish don't usually tilt sideways like that. Moral of the story is don't give a bannister post topper to your brother Jaimie when you know you'll have to look at it everytime you go to his house and think to yourself " those fish look dead , why did you do it like that ?". Really , that's probably not a widespread problem for everybody, but it would have been good advice for me.. before I gave it to him.
