A Rude Awakening !
Monday, August 23, 2010 at 3:42PM A funny thing happened at 7 this morning, well, when I say funny I mean funny in the peculiar sense. I heard the crunching of catfood, which in itself is totally normal because I feed Sasha and Spike in my bedroom. Which probably seems strange but anyway. Apparently ,my unconscious brain could tell that the crunching sounded strange and woke me up, so as I look over to their food bowl I see a little possum jump from the bench and scurry up into my clothes closet.
A friend was visiting from North Carolina , so I went and woke her up ( for moral support ) and got my kiln gloves and carefully put it in a wicker basket, with a minimum of squealing ( on my part ). He just hissed a little and showed his little teeth, as they do. I am not a wienie and I'm extremely wildlife friendly, furry or scaly. However, if you're not used to handling certain animals you might imagine that they're squirmier or more likely to bite than they actually are and also being small I was worried he would slip away and fall or something. Again, not a wienie.
So I got online and then talked to wildlife rehabber Karen in Staunton who educated me about possums regarding rescuing and whether it needed it or not. It's always best to check with an expert. It was in fact too small to be on it's own- it was less than 8 inches long without the tail and so she said to take it to the Wildlife Center of Virginia. So the Possum , Amy , Bhindi and I , after a very necessary quick stop at McDonald's for coffee, headed to Waynesboro where the possum was taken in by the staff there. He or she will eventually be released at the proper time and place after gaining some weight.
So Thanks !! to the Wildlife Center of Virginia, they do an amazing job and also they need donations or help fulfilling their Wish list of supplies to be able to help people and possums like me ! To see behind the scenes go to their Open House on August 29, Sept 12,26 and October 10, and 17. Tours are free but reservations are suggested.
Meanwhile , back at my bedroom , Amy's gone home to N.C so I'm moving into the guest room , just in case. Maybe I'm just a little bit wienie.

Good News ! The little possum has been released! Happily she has gained enough weight to go out on her own. So Thanks Again to the Wildlife Center of Va for being there for her and me, in our moment of need. And they're having their Annual Gala and Benefit at Stonewall Jackson Hotel on November 6 2010. So Save the Date. I'll be donating a dinosaur that I make specially for them!
